We do individual therapy, group therapy, gratitude healing, hypnotherapy and use weight loss medications in our office treatment programs. We feel that patience, honesty and gratitude are three basic virtues and work to install these virtues in all of our patients. The medications we use are called PHENTERMINE, PHENDYMETRAZINE, DIETHYL PROPION, DIDREX, AND BYETTA. About 10% of obese people have Attention Deficit Disorder. Their obesity is related to their ADD and in those patients we use ADDERALL or RITALIN, instead of the diet medications. These medications are much safer than obesity , which can cause hypertension, stroke, heart attack, and stroke.

Since 300,000 people die each year from obesity and obesity related disorders like hypertension, heart attack, diabetes, stroke, and kidney failure, the problem is big, real and serious and is not going to go away even with current political manipulations. We have not seen any pulmonary hypertension or leaky heart valves in my patients on these drugs. Some people have headaches the first few days on the medications, some have a dry mouth, and some get insomnia, nervous and irritable and need to switch drugs or take smaller dosages. These problems are all small when compared to being five foot tall and weighing two hundred pounds. It takes a month or so to get set on the medications and to find the correct dose. After that the patients come in to see me every two weeks or once a month and lose 6-8 pounds a month. Most patients take about six months to lose fifty or sixty pounds.

There is a role for the antidepressant drugs in the treatment of obesity. Some people lose weight on Wellbutrin given by itself. Some patients need Celexa or Prozac along with the weight loss medications because they are depressed and because the weight loss is facilitated by the co-administration of the drugs. This is not approved by the drug companies or the government agencies or the PDR so there has to be a specific indication for using an antidepressant along with the weight loss drugs. The drugs should be used in small doses under careful medical supervision in the office.
